MWGP-101 is the project work of the IGNOU MA in Women’s and Gender Studies (MAWGS). It is an 8-credit course placed in the second year of the programme. The work usually runs in two parts: a synopsis that is approved first, and then the project report based on that approved synopsis.

Who can be your MWGP-101 guide?

The guide eligibility for this project is set in the official project guideline, and we have not quoted it here because it may change. In IGNOU projects the guide is normally a qualified academic or an experienced professional in the subject, and the guide’s signed bio-data goes with the synopsis. Read the eligibility paragraph in your guideline first. If you are not sure whether your choice qualifies, HelpBooks mentors will check it against the guideline with you before you post anything.

Choosing an MAWGS project topic

Too broad
“Status of women in India”
Approvable
“Participation of women in Gram Panchayat decision making in two blocks of Sitapur district”

A good MWGP-101 topic is narrow, tied to one place or group, and linked to the courses you have studied. Areas that work well:

  • Women in political processes: women representatives in local bodies and their experience of office
  • Women and the economy: self-help groups, home-based work or women’s access to credit in one area
  • Gender and social structure: family, caste or community norms that shape women’s choices
  • Gender and life narratives: life stories of women in a profession, village or community
  • Gender, media and arts: representation of women in a film, serial, advertisement or song

If you work with an NGO, school, health centre or local office, a topic linked to your own work makes data collection easier. Take care with consent and privacy when you interview women about personal experiences. This is the first thing our mentors check when they suggest topics.

MWGP-101 synopsis format

The exact headings and the proforma are given in the project guideline, so follow that document. A project synopsis in IGNOU normally covers these points:

  • Title and introduction to the problem
  • Rationale and objectives
  • Review of literature
  • Research methodology: study area, sample, tools and analysis methods
  • Expected outcomes and limitations

The proforma and the guide’s details must be filled and signed as the guideline asks. Do not start the full report before the synopsis is approved.

MWGP-101 report structure

After approval, the report is built on the same topic, objectives, sample and study area. A usual chapter plan is:

  • Introduction
  • Review of literature
  • Research methodology
  • Analysis and discussion, with each table or quotation followed by its interpretation
  • Findings, conclusion and suggestions
  • References and annexures such as the interview schedule or questionnaire

Check your guideline for the required length, referencing style and the documents to bind in, which usually include the approved synopsis and an originality certificate.

Why MWGP-101 proposals and reports come back

  • Forms not signed or dated by the student or the guide
  • Guide who does not meet the eligibility in the guideline
  • Topic too wide, or not related to women’s and gender studies
  • Objectives that the methodology cannot answer
  • Report that changes the topic, sample or study area from the approved synopsis
  • Approved synopsis or certificate missing from the bound copy
  • Copied literature review or theory
  • Submission sent to the wrong office

If your synopsis is returned: revise it using the evaluator’s comments and resubmit as your guideline directs, quoting your synopsis number if one was given. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis using the evaluator’s comments.

How HelpBooks mentors MAWGS learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their synopsis has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn data into a full report. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MWGP-101 journey:

  • 5–6 workable topic options based on your work, community and city, to discuss with your guide
  • Synopsis drafted with you in the format your guideline asks for, with the proforma checked line by line
  • Help with revisions if the evaluator returns your synopsis
  • After approval, support in building the full report on your approved synopsis, with original writing, your own study data and a plagiarism check
  • A final check of the certificate, attachments and envelope before you submit
  • Support until your result is declared, including any changes the evaluator asks for
