MTTP-022 is the project work of the IGNOU MA in Translation Studies (MATS). It is a 16-credit course placed in the second year, so it is the largest single piece of work in the programme. IGNOU describes the major project as including a practical component. The work usually runs in two parts: a synopsis that is approved first, and then the full project based on that approved synopsis.

Who can be your MTTP-022 guide?

The guide eligibility for this project is set in the official project guideline, and we have not quoted it here because it may change. In IGNOU projects the guide is normally a qualified academic or an experienced professional in the subject, and the guide’s signed bio-data goes with the synopsis. Read the eligibility paragraph in your guideline first. If you are not sure whether your choice qualifies, HelpBooks mentors will check it against the guideline with you before you post anything.

Choosing an MATS project topic

Too broad
“Problems of translation in India”
Approvable
“Translation of selected Hindi short stories into English, with a study of how culture-specific terms were handled”

A good MTTP-022 topic is narrow, based on a text or data you can access, and tied to the courses of the MATS programme. Areas that work well:

  • Literary translation: translating a set of stories, poems or an essay with a critical introduction
  • Translation and linguistics: a comparison of structures, idioms or terms across two languages
  • Translation and mass communication: translating and studying news, advertisements or subtitles
  • Terminology: a small glossary of technical terms with equivalents in a chosen field
  • Translation and culture: how names, food, kinship or festival terms are carried across languages

Confirm with your guide whether the project should be a translation with commentary or a research study, as your guideline allows. This is the first thing our mentors check when they suggest topics.

MTTP-022 synopsis format

The exact headings and the proforma are given in the project guideline, so follow that document. A synopsis in IGNOU normally covers these points:

  • Title and introduction to the problem or text
  • Rationale and objectives
  • Review of literature
  • Methodology: text or data, approach to translation or analysis
  • Expected outcomes and limitations

The proforma and the guide’s details must be filled and signed as the guideline asks. Do not start the full project before the synopsis is approved.

MTTP-022 project structure

After approval, the project is built on the same topic, text and plan that were approved. A usual plan is:

  • Introduction
  • Review of literature
  • Methodology
  • The translation or the analysis chapters, with discussion of problems and strategies
  • Findings and conclusion
  • Bibliography and annexures

Check your guideline for the required length, referencing style and the documents to bind in, which usually include the approved synopsis and an originality certificate.

Why MTTP-022 proposals and reports come back

  • Forms not signed or dated by the student or the guide
  • Guide who does not meet the eligibility in the guideline
  • Topic too wide, or text too long to handle properly
  • Objectives that the methodology cannot answer
  • Project that changes the topic or text from the approved synopsis
  • Approved synopsis or certificate missing from the bound copy
  • Translation with no discussion of problems and choices
  • Copied literature review or theory
  • Submission sent to the wrong office

If your synopsis is returned: revise it using the evaluator’s comments and resubmit as your guideline directs, quoting your synopsis number if one was given. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis using the evaluator’s comments.

How HelpBooks mentors MATS learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their synopsis has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn it into a project of this size. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MTTP-022 journey:

  • 5–6 workable topic and text options based on your language pair and interests, to discuss with your guide
  • Synopsis drafted with you in the format your guideline asks for, with the proforma checked line by line
  • Help with revisions if the evaluator returns your synopsis
  • After approval, support in building the full project on your approved synopsis, with original writing and a plagiarism check
  • A final check of the certificate, attachments and envelope before you submit
  • Support until your result is declared, including any changes the evaluator asks for
