MSWP-001 is the dissertation course of the IGNOU Master of Social Work (MSW) programme, run by the School of Social Work. For most learners it is the first long piece of social research they write, and it works best when it grows out of a community, agency or problem they already know from field work. The credit weight, length, forms and dates are set in the official guideline, so keep that document open as you read this page.

Who can be your MSWP-001 guide?
The guide qualifications, and the forms that carry the guide’s details, are set in your MSW dissertation guideline, so check it before you ask anyone to guide you. In general, IGNOU expects a guide who is qualified in social work or a related subject and has relevant experience, and who signs the synopsis and the final dissertation. HelpBooks can check your guide’s details against the guideline before you submit.
Choosing an MSWP-001 topic
“Problems of women in India”
“Awareness of legal rights among domestic workers living in two slum clusters of one city”
A good social work dissertation is narrow, ethical to study and possible with the access you have. Some areas that work well:
- Family and child welfare: child labour, foster care or parenting stress in a defined area
- Women and gender: self-help groups, domestic violence services or workplace safety
- Ageing and disability: quality of life of elderly people or inclusion of persons with disability
- Health and mental health: substance use, stress or coping among a defined group
- Community and development: a welfare scheme, an NGO programme or community participation in one locality
If you work or do field work with an agency, a topic from that setting makes data collection far easier, with the agency’s permission. This is also the first thing our mentors look at when they suggest topics.
MSWP-001 synopsis format
Follow the proforma and sections in your MSW dissertation guideline. A social work synopsis usually covers:
- Title and statement of the problem
- Review of earlier studies
- Objectives and, where needed, hypotheses
- Research design, universe, sample, tools and method of data collection
- Ethical considerations such as consent and confidentiality
- Limitations and references
The proforma, signatures and guide details asked for in the guideline go along with the synopsis. Keep a copy of everything you post.
MSWP-001 dissertation structure
After approval, the dissertation is built on the same topic, objectives, sample and area that were approved. It normally covers:
- Introduction and statement of the problem
- Review of literature
- Research methodology
- Data analysis and interpretation, with tables and charts each followed by its explanation
- Findings, discussion and suggestions for social work practice
- Conclusion
- References and annexures such as the interview schedule
The bound dissertation must also include the approved synopsis and the certificates or declaration forms listed in your guideline, along with the fee receipt where asked.
HelpBooks mentors help you turn your approved synopsis into a complete MSWP-001 dissertation with your own field data, proper tables and interpretation, and a final annexure check before you post it. WhatsApp us on 8800002552
Why MSWP-001 proposals and dissertations come back
- Proforma not signed or dated by the student or the guide
- Guide who does not meet the guideline requirements
- Topic too wide, or sample and area not clearly stated
- Objectives that the method cannot answer
- Dissertation that changes the topic, sample or area from the approved synopsis
- Approved synopsis or certificate missing from the bound copy
- Copied literature review or theory
- Dissertation sent to the wrong office
If your synopsis is not approved: revise it using the evaluator’s comments and resubmit as your guideline directs, with your proposal reference number. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis using those comments.
How HelpBooks mentors MSW learners
Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their synopsis has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn field data into a dissertation. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MSWP-001 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:
- 5–6 workable topic options based on your agency, job and city, to discuss with your guide
- Synopsis drafted with you in the format of your guideline, with the proforma checked line by line before you post it
- Help with revisions if the evaluator returns your synopsis
- After approval, support in building the full dissertation on your approved synopsis, with original writing, your own field data and a plagiarism check
- A final check of the annexures, certificates and envelope before you send it
- Support until your result is declared, including any changes the evaluator asks for

Common questions
Is MSWP-001 compulsory?
It is the dissertation course of the MSW programme, so it is part of the programme structure. Check your programme guide for its credits.
Can I use my field work agency for the dissertation?
Often yes, if the agency allows it, you protect the identity of the people you study, and your guide agrees. Check your guideline for any limits.
Where do I find the forms and dates?
In the latest MSW dissertation guideline on ignou.ac.in, or from your Regional Centre. Dates and forms are revised from time to time.
Can HelpBooks help if I have already started?
Yes. Many learners come to us after a returned synopsis or with approval in hand. Share what you have, and we pick up from that stage.
