MSLP-017 is a dissertation course of the IGNOU MA Spanish (MASL) programme, offered through open and distance learning by the School of Foreign Languages. The programme is taught in Spanish and includes practical work in translation studies, interpretation and linguistics. A dissertation is a longer and more argued piece of work than a short project, so the topic, approval and planning matter. The credit weight, length, language, forms and dates are set in the official guideline, so keep that document open as you read this page.

Who can approve or guide your MSLP-017 dissertation?

The people who approve the title and synopsis, and any guide qualifications, are set in your MASL guideline, so check it before you start. For language dissertations at IGNOU this is usually the subject faculty or the academic counsellors of the language, but follow what your own guideline says. HelpBooks can check your topic and synopsis against the guideline before you submit.

Choosing an MSLP-017 topic

Too broad
“Spanish language and culture”
Approvable
“Representation of women in two novels by one Spanish-language author”

A good dissertation topic asks one question that your sources can answer. Some areas that work well:

  • Literature: a theme, character type or style across two or three works of one author
  • Translation studies: a translated text with a critical introduction on the problems met and solutions chosen
  • Linguistics: a focused study of a grammar point, vocabulary field or learner errors
  • Cultural studies: cinema, music, festivals or history of the Spanish-speaking world, studied through specific examples
  • Language teaching: methods and difficulties of learning Spanish in India

A topic with enough accessible books and articles is easier to finish than one with almost no sources. This is the first thing our mentors check when they suggest topics.

MSLP-017 synopsis format

Follow the proforma and sections in your MASL guideline. A dissertation synopsis usually covers:

  • Title and the exact topic chosen
  • Aim and research questions
  • Review of earlier work on the topic
  • Primary texts or data, and the method of study
  • Plan of chapters
  • References

The proforma, signatures and any approval details asked for in the guideline go along with the synopsis. Keep a copy of everything you post.

MSLP-017 dissertation structure

After approval, the dissertation follows the topic and chapter plan that were approved. It normally covers:

  • Introduction and aim
  • Review of earlier work
  • Method or approach
  • Analysis chapters, each ending with a short summary
  • Conclusion
  • Bibliography

The bound dissertation must also include the cover page, approved synopsis and the other items listed in your guideline. Write in your own words; text copied from books or websites is a common reason for rejection.

Why MSLP-017 proposals and dissertations come back

  • Title and synopsis not approved before the work was written
  • Topic too wide, or too thin to fill the length required
  • Work longer or shorter than the limit in the guideline
  • Dissertation that changes the topic or plan from the approved synopsis
  • Text copied from books or websites
  • Approved synopsis, fee receipt or other required document missing
  • No bibliography
  • Dissertation sent to the wrong address

If your synopsis or dissertation is returned: follow the instructions given by the evaluator or your Regional Centre and resubmit within the allowed time. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis using the comments you received.

How HelpBooks mentors MA Spanish learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, they are unsure how to build chapters from their sources, or no one has checked their documents. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MSLP-017 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:

  • 5–6 workable topic options based on the sources available to you, to discuss with your counsellor
  • Synopsis drafted with you in the format of your guideline, with the proforma checked line by line before you post it
  • Help with revisions if your topic or synopsis is not approved
  • After approval, support in writing the dissertation in your own words, with a plagiarism check
  • A final check of the bibliography, documents and envelope before you send it
  • Support until your result is declared, including any changes asked for

Common questions

Which language should the dissertation be written in?
Check your MSLP-017 guideline. It states the language of the dissertation.

Can I choose any topic?
Choose a topic within Spanish studies and get the title and synopsis approved as your guideline says before you write the dissertation.

Where do I find the credits, length and dates?
In your MASL programme guide and the latest guideline on ignou.ac.in, or from your Regional Centre.

Can HelpBooks help if I have already started?
Yes. Many learners come to us with a half-written dissertation or a returned synopsis. Share what you have, and we pick up from that stage.
