MRUP-012 is the Project Work course of the IGNOU MA Russian (MARUS) programme. It carries 4 credits and sits in the second year, along with courses such as Russian Grammar-2, Russian Literature and Interpretation. Unlike a long dissertation, this is a short written project: you pick a sub-topic, get the title and synopsis approved, and then submit the finished work to IGNOU.

Who approves your MRUP-012 topic?

Russian Faculty, SOFLRussian Faculty of the School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU
Academic CounsellorsRussian Academic Counsellors teaching MA Russian at your Regional Centre

The guideline asks for approval of the title and synopsis, but it does not set out guide qualifications beyond this. If you want to propose a sub-topic that is not on IGNOU’s list, you need prior approval: the topic and synopsis are sent to shivajibhaskar@ignou.ac.in before the IGNOU deadlines. HelpBooks can check your topic and synopsis before you send them.

Choosing an MRUP-012 topic

Too broad
“Russian literature”
Approvable
A single listed sub-topic, such as “Glasnost and Perestroika” or “Russian Music”, treated in a focused way within 4,000 words

IGNOU lists sub-topics under four areas: Russian Culture, History of Russia, Russian Literature, and Translation. Examples named in the guideline include Russian Music, Russian Films, Lenin, Stalin, Glasnost and Perestroika, Old Russian Literature, and translation of a Russian short story or poetry. Some areas that work well:

  • Russian culture: Russian music or Russian films, with a clear period or a few works to discuss
  • History of Russia: Lenin, Stalin, or the reforms of Glasnost and Perestroika
  • Old Russian literature: early chronicles and tales, treated through one or two texts
  • Russian literature: one writer or one short story, studied for its theme and style
  • Translation: a Russian short story or poem translated with a short note on your choices

A topic for which you can find books and reliable articles is easier to finish than a topic with almost no sources. This is the first thing our mentors check when they suggest topics.

MRUP-012 synopsis and cover page

The guideline asks for an approved project title and synopsis but does not give a fixed proforma, so follow what your Russian counsellor or the SOFL faculty asks for. A clear synopsis usually states:

  • The title and the sub-topic you have chosen
  • What you will discuss and why it matters
  • The main sources you plan to use
  • The language of the project (Russian or English)

The project itself must carry a cover page with your enrolment number, name, address and date (top right), and the course title, project topic and Regional or Study Centre. The guideline provides a template for this page.

MRUP-012 project structure and documents to send

The guideline does not set a chapter scheme. Keep the work well organised, for example:

  • Introduction to the topic
  • Main discussion, in short headed sections
  • Conclusion drawn from your discussion
  • List of important sources consulted, both online and print, at the end

Copying directly from any online or printed source is not allowed, so write in your own words. Send these documents to the Assistant Registrar (Project), SED, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi-110068:

  • Copy of your IGNOU student ID
  • Approved project title and synopsis
  • Project submission fee receipt
  • The project work in original

Keep a full copy with you in case the original is lost in transit.

Why MRUP-012 projects come back

  • Sub-topic chosen without approval of the title and synopsis
  • A main head taken as the topic instead of a focused sub-topic
  • Work longer than the 4,000-word / 12-page limit
  • Text copied from books or websites
  • Cover page details missing or incomplete
  • No list of sources at the end
  • Student ID copy, approved synopsis or fee receipt missing from the envelope
  • Project sent to the wrong address

If your synopsis or project is returned: follow the instructions given by the evaluator or your Regional Centre and resubmit within the allowed time. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis or project using the comments you received.

How HelpBooks mentors MA Russian learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a sub-topic, they are unsure how to write a short project within the word limit, or they have no one to check the documents. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MRUP-012 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:

  • 5–6 workable topic options from the listed areas, to discuss with your counsellor
  • Synopsis drafted with you, with the title and cover page checked before you send it for approval
  • Help with revisions if your topic or synopsis is not approved
  • After approval, support in writing the project within 4,000 words, with original writing and a plagiarism check
  • A final check of the source list, documents and envelope before you send it to SED
  • Support until your result is declared, including any changes asked for
