MRDP-001 is the Field Work and Dissertation course of the IGNOU MA in Rural Development, MARD. It is an empirical study: you go to the field, collect data from a defined group of respondents, and report what you find. According to IGNOU’s dissertation manual, preparation begins after you have completed the courses MRD-101, MRD-102 and MRD-103, and the manual is issued by the School of Continuing Education.
Check this first: the manual we could read does not state the credits, the semester or the fee, and IGNOU may have updated some office names and routes since it was written. Confirm these in your programme guide and with your Study Centre before you post anything.

Choosing an MARD dissertation topic
“Rural development in India”
“Impact of self-help groups on the income and decision-making of women in three villages of Nalanda district, Bihar”
A good topic is narrow, tied to one programme or issue, and possible to study with respondents you can reach. Some areas that work well:
- Rural livelihoods: MGNREGA, self-help groups or farm and non-farm income in a block
- Rural health and sanitation: awareness and use of health or sanitation services in selected villages
- Rural education and skills: reach of skill training or school facilities among a village group
- Panchayati raj: participation of women or weaker sections in gram sabha meetings
- Rural entrepreneurship and credit: access to micro-credit or small enterprise problems in a district
If you work with an NGO, block office, bank or panchayat, a topic from your own area makes the field work easier.
MRDP-001 proposal format
The proposal is about 10 pages and should make your conceptual framework clear. According to the manual, it covers:
- Project title
- Introduction and statement of the problem
- Objectives and hypothesis, if any
- Universe and sample
- Data collection tools
- Data analysis and tables
- Chapter plan and report-writing plan
It is accompanied by the Annexure IV proforma for approval, which carries your details, enrolment number, Study Centre, the title, supervisor details and an Approved or Not Approved section.
MRDP-001 dissertation structure
The manual advises five to eight chapters of similar length:
- Chapter 1: Introduction
- Chapter 2: Research design and review of literature
- Chapter 3: Profile of respondents
- Chapters 4 to 6: Interpretation of data, with one or two objectives in each
- An optional case-study chapter
- Last chapter: Summary of findings and suggestions
Front matter includes the table of contents, lists of tables and diagrams, preface, acknowledgement, declaration and the supervisor’s certificate. The first page carries your name, enrolment number, full address and supervisor’s name. Use a hard cover, preferably light rose, and prepare two copies, one for IGNOU and one for yourself.

Why MRDP-001 proposals and dissertations come back
- Proposal sent to the Regional Centre or headquarters instead of the supervisor, as the manual directs
- Annexure IV proforma incomplete
- Topic too wide, or sample not clearly defined
- Dissertation that departs from the approved proposal
- Missing declaration or supervisor’s certificate
- Loose or spiral binding, which the manual does not permit
- Final draft not shown to the supervisor before binding
- Text found to be copied, repeated or translated from another dissertation, which can lead to rejection and a ban of a couple of years or even for life
If your work is returned: revise it using the comments and send it again as your instructions direct. Our mentors can rework a returned proposal or dissertation using the comments.

- 5–6 workable topic options based on your job, village or block, to discuss with your supervisor
- Proposal drafted with you, with the Annexure IV proforma checked line by line
- Help with the interview schedule or questionnaire and with pre-testing
- After approval, support in building the full dissertation, with original writing, your own field data and a plagiarism check
- A final check of the declaration, certificate, binding and envelope before you submit
- Support until your result is declared, including any changes asked for
