MPYP-001 is the dissertation course of the IGNOU MA in Philosophy, MAPY. Unlike a survey project, it is a philosophical research paper. IGNOU’s own manual (issued by the School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies) says the final product may be called a research paper, scientific essay, special study, thesis or dissertation. It is built on reading, argument and analysis of texts and ideas rather than on questionnaires.

Check this first: the manual we could read does not state the credits, the semester, the supervisor rules, the submission address or the fee. Those are given in your programme guide and the dissertation instructions that come with your study material. This page covers what the manual does say and tells you what to confirm.

Who can be your MPYP-001 supervisor?

The manual advises choosing a supervisor who has an interest and specialisation in the subject, the ability to guide, and the capacity to meet your needs. It does not give formal qualification rules, so check the eligibility conditions in your programme guideline. Send us your supervisor’s details and we will check them against it before you submit anything.

Choosing an MAPY dissertation topic

Too broad
“Indian philosophy and Western philosophy”
Approvable
“Concept of non-violence in Gandhi’s writings and its relevance to conflict resolution”

A good topic is narrow, has enough primary and secondary sources available to you, and allows an argument rather than a summary. Some areas that work well:

  • Ethics: a moral concept in a thinker’s work, or an applied issue such as environmental or medical ethics
  • Indian philosophy: a concept from the Upanishads, Buddhism, Jainism or Advaita read through a specific text
  • Western philosophy: a problem in the work of one thinker, such as Kant, Hume or Wittgenstein
  • Social and political philosophy: justice, freedom or equality in a modern thinker
  • Philosophy of religion or mind: a defined question with clear sources

Pick something you have already read around. It saves months in the first draft.

MPYP-001 synopsis format

According to the manual, the synopsis contains:

  • A provisional title
  • Aim and objectives
  • An outline of contents
  • Method of procedure
  • The source materials available

Before writing it, prepare a schema (chapters and subtitles) and a working bibliography in consultation with your supervisor. If your programme guideline gives a proforma, fill it exactly and get it signed and dated.

MPYP-001 dissertation structure

For a full-length dissertation the manual gives this order:

  • Title page: main title, your name and roll number, supervisor’s name and designation, purpose, month and year of submission, institution and city with PIN code, with 1.5 line spacing
  • Acknowledgement and table of contents
  • Introduction: the topic, the reason for the study, the methods used and why the chapters are divided as they are
  • Main body in numbered chapters, each starting on a new page
  • Conclusion: findings in relation to the questions raised in the introduction, issues for further research, without dogmatic claims. It is not a summary of earlier chapters.
  • Reference list arranged alphabetically by author surname
  • Appendix and index

Why MPYP-001 synopses and dissertations come back

  • Topic too wide, so the dissertation becomes a summary of many views
  • No clear aim or objectives in the synopsis
  • Conclusion that repeats the chapters instead of answering the question raised in the introduction
  • Few or weak sources, or a bibliography not in alphabetical order
  • Supervisor not consulted on the drafts
  • Dissertation that departs from the approved synopsis
  • Copied or paraphrased text without credit
  • Title page or certificates missing items

If your synopsis is returned: revise it using the comments and send it again as your instructions direct. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis using the evaluator’s comments.

How HelpBooks mentors MAPY learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot narrow a topic, their synopsis has come back once, or they have read widely but cannot shape an argument. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MPYP-001 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:

  • 5–6 workable topic options based on your reading, to discuss with your supervisor
  • Synopsis, schema and working bibliography drafted with you
  • Help with revisions if your synopsis is returned
  • After approval, support in writing the dissertation chapter by chapter, with original writing and a plagiarism check
  • A final check of the title page, certificates, references and binding before you submit
  • Support until your result is declared, including any changes asked for

Common questions

Is MPYP-001 a survey project?
No. The manual describes it as a philosophical research paper, so it rests on texts and argument rather than field data.

How long should the dissertation be?
The manual gives no page or word count. Keep to the scope that fits the time available and ask your supervisor and programme coordinator for any limit.

How many drafts should I show my supervisor?
The manual describes first, second and final drafts, each reviewed by the supervisor, with chapters submitted one by one and time left for corrections.

Is there a viva?
The manual we read does not mention one. Check your programme guideline, and know your own argument well either way.

Can HelpBooks help if I have already started?
Yes. Many learners come to us with a part-written draft or a returned synopsis. Share what you have, and we pick up from that stage.

HelpBooks is an independent academic support service and is not affiliated with IGNOU. Rules on this page are summarised from the MPYP-001 manual; always follow the latest official guideline and your supervisor’s instructions.
