MNMP-012 is the Internet Research Project of the IGNOU MA in Journalism and Digital Media, MAJDM, run by the School of Journalism and New Media Studies. It is an independent, organised investigation where you apply what you studied to a digital media issue. The activities run online through the LMS, and the stages must be completed in sequence. You choose one of two tracks, and then work on a proposal first and a report after.

Who can be your MNMP-012 supervisor?

IGNOU counsellorAll IGNOU counsellors are recognised supervisors
Media professional or teacherA Master’s degree plus 5 years of experience in the media industry, media faculty or communication research

A supervisor is mandatory. The supervisor signs the proposal cover page (Annexure A) and the declaration (Annexure C).

Choosing an MAJDM project topic

Too broad
“Impact of social media on society”
Approvable
“Use of Instagram Reels by regional news outlets in Punjab: content types and audience engagement”

A good MNMP-012 topic is narrow, relates to digital media, and can be studied with material you can actually reach. The manual warns against changing the topic or its wording after the proposal is sent, so settle it before you submit. Some areas that work well:

  • Digital news: how news websites or YouTube channels present stories in your region
  • Social media and audiences: youth use of a platform, engagement with a campaign
  • Misinformation: fake news habits and fact-checking awareness among a defined group
  • Media and information literacy: awareness among students or teachers in your city (or the Track B review route)
  • Online video and OTT: viewing patterns and content preferences of a specific audience

If you work in media, a topic linked to your own newsroom or platform makes access to material easier.

MNMP-012 proposal format

The proposal covers:

  • Title
  • Problem statement(s)
  • Objectives
  • Issues or questions, and hypotheses if any
  • Data required
  • Research methodology
  • Expected outcomes

The proforma (Annexure A) carries your name, course code, programme number, address, Regional Centre and Study Centre details, the project title, and your supervisor’s certification with name, designation, address and signature. The manual mentions both a small number of objectives for the proposal and a stage requirement of at least three aims with at least six objectives, so ask your coordinator which applies to you. Track A is done in stages with set word limits, such as 800 words for the research area and 2,000 words for a review of 20 articles.

MNMP-012 report structure

For Track A the report has front matter and four to five body chapters:

  • Cover, contents, list of tables, figures and maps, acknowledgements, abbreviations, and a 100-word abstract after the approval page
  • Introduction
  • Review of literature
  • Research design and methodology
  • Findings and discussion, one chapter per objective
  • Summary and conclusions
  • References (APA style) and appendices

Use A4 paper with the margins given in the manual and a title page numbered as page 1. Track B reports follow a different plan: research area, concept note, mind map, PRISMA chart, review of 40 articles, research trends and a 500-word conclusion. Marks go for clarity of topic (10%), language and style (20%), objectives and methodology (25%), analysis and interpretation (25%), conclusions (10%) and references (10%).

Why MNMP-012 proposals and reports come back

  • Supervisor who does not meet the Master’s plus 5 years rule
  • Annexure A or the declaration not signed by the supervisor
  • Objectives and methodology that do not match each other
  • Topic or wording changed after the proposal was sent
  • Revised proposal that does not include the faculty’s comments
  • Wrong citation style, since the manual asks for APA
  • Copied or reproduced material, which leads to cancellation
  • Marks below 40%, which means redoing the work

If your proposal is returned: revise it to include every comment and submit again. Our mentors can rework a returned proposal using the faculty’s comments.

How HelpBooks mentors MAJDM learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their proposal has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn data into a 60–70 page report. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MNMP-012 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:

  • 5–6 workable topic options based on your work, interests and city, to discuss with your supervisor
  • Proposal drafted with you in the MNMP-012 format, with Annexure A checked line by line before you submit it
  • Help with revisions if your proposal is returned
  • After approval, support in building the full report, with original writing, proper APA references and a plagiarism check
  • A final check of the annexures, approval sheet and file before you send it to the Project Section, SED
  • Support until your result is declared, including any changes asked for
