MGYP-031 is the Dissertation / Project Work of the IGNOU M.Sc Geoinformatics (MSCGI) programme. It carries 8 credits and sits in the fourth semester. According to the MSCGI Programme Guide, you take it as an alternative to two 4-credit electives (MGYE-041, MGYE-042 or MGYE-043), not in addition to them.
The MGYP-031 journey at a glance
The Programme Guide describes the order in simple terms: pick a research topic, find a supervisor, prepare a synopsis with the supervisor, get it approved, then complete the work. The green tag shows where HelpBooks supports you.

Who can be your MGYP-031 supervisor?
The Programme Guide asks you to find a supervisor and prepare the synopsis in consultation with them, but it does not print the eligibility conditions. They are given in the MGYP-031 project manual, so read that first or check with the MSCGI programme coordinator. HelpBooks can check your supervisor's eligibility before you submit the synopsis.
Choosing an MSCGI dissertation topic
“Applications of remote sensing and GIS”
“Land use and land cover change in Ranchi district between 2000 and 2020 using Landsat imagery”
A good topic is narrow, has a clear study area and time frame, and uses data that is free or easy to obtain. Some areas that work well:
- Land use change: LULC classification and change detection for a district or city
- Urban growth: urban sprawl and built-up expansion of a town using satellite images
- Hazard mapping: flood or landslide susceptibility using GIS layers
- Water resources: groundwater potential zones, watershed prioritisation, surface water change
- Vegetation and agriculture: NDVI based crop or forest cover monitoring
Pick a study area you know. Ground checking and local knowledge make the accuracy assessment stronger.
MGYP-031 synopsis format
Use the proforma and outline given in the MGYP-031 project manual. A geoinformatics synopsis normally covers:
- Title and introduction to the problem
- Study area description
- Review of literature
- Objectives
- Data used (satellite images, maps, ancillary data) and software
- Methodology with a flow chart
- Expected outcome and time plan
- References
MGYP-031 dissertation structure
After approval, the dissertation follows the approved topic, study area and objectives. A usual layout is:
- Introduction
- Study area and data
- Review of literature
- Methodology
- Results and discussion with maps, tables and accuracy assessment
- Conclusion and scope for further work
- References and annexures
Attach the approved synopsis, certificates and any forms the project manual lists, and bind the copies as it directs.
HelpBooks mentors help you turn your approved synopsis into a complete MGYP-031 dissertation with your own study-area analysis, maps, tables and interpretation, and a final check of the annexures before you submit. WhatsApp us on 8800002552
Why MGYP-031 synopses and dissertations come back
- Supervisor outside the eligibility given in the project manual
- Proforma not signed or dated
- Topic too wide, or study area and data not clearly stated
- Objectives that the methodology cannot answer
- Dissertation that changes the topic or study area from the approved synopsis
- Synopsis feedback not reflected in the final work
- Maps or images copied from other studies without a clear source
- Copied literature review or theory
If your synopsis is returned: revise it using the evaluator's comments and send it again as the project manual directs. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis using those comments.
How HelpBooks mentors MSCGI learners
Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their synopsis has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn maps and data into a dissertation. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MGYP-031 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:
- 5–6 workable topic options based on your region, job and data access, to discuss with your supervisor
- Synopsis drafted with you in the manual's format, with the proforma checked line by line before you post it
- Help with revisions if the evaluator returns your synopsis
- After approval, support in building the full dissertation on your approved synopsis, with original writing, your own maps and analysis and a plagiarism check
- A final check of annexures, certificates and envelope before you submit
- Support until your result is declared, including viva preparation and any changes the evaluator asks for

Common questions
Is MGYP-031 compulsory?
No. The Programme Guide gives it as an alternative to two 4-credit electives. You take the dissertation or the two electives.
Which semester is it in?
The fourth semester, with 8 credits.
Where do I send the synopsis and the dissertation?
To the address given in the MGYP-031 project manual.
Is there a viva?
The Programme Guide refers to a viva-voce along with the dissertation. Details are in the project manual, so keep your own work and maps ready to explain.
Can HelpBooks help if I have already started?
