Who can be your MFLP-011 guide?

The course sheet says the topic and synopsis are finalised in consultation with the Programme Coordinator or Academic Counsellor. It does not list further conditions for a guide, so check your programme guideline and ask your study centre who is approved. HelpBooks can help you prepare the topic discussion so that your synopsis is ready when you meet them.

Choosing an MFLP-011 topic

Too broad
“French literature”
Approvable
“Absurdity and alienation in Albert Camus’s novel L’Étranger”

The course sheet allows many areas of French studies. Studies based on selected novels, literary works or poetry collections are accepted. Areas you can choose from:

  • Literature: a novel, play or poetry collection, its themes and style
  • Language and linguistics: a point of French grammar or usage, or French in contact with other languages
  • Translation and interpretation: a translated text and the choices made in it
  • Teaching French (FLE didactics) and techno-pedagogy: methods and tools for learners of French
  • Culture and area studies: French history, Francophonie, French arts and cinema, Indo-French travel studies, language policies

Pick a text or theme you can read in French with comfort, because you will quote from it throughout. This is also the first thing our mentors look at when they suggest topics.

MFLP-011 synopsis format

The course sheet requires an approved synopsis but does not publish a fixed synopsis template, so follow what your Programme Coordinator or Academic Counsellor asks for. A synopsis normally gives the title, the aim and questions of the study, the texts or sources, the method of analysis and a chapter plan. HelpBooks drafts it with you and checks it before you take it for approval.

MFLP-011 dissertation structure

The dissertation is 45–50 pages in French, typed on both sides and spiral bound. It normally includes an introduction, chapters of analysis, a conclusion, a bibliography and any annexures. The pages for the bibliography, annexures, introductory pages and the copy of the synopsis approval count towards the 45–50 pages, so plan the length of your chapters accordingly.

Why MFLP-011 proposals and dissertations come back

  • Topic outside the areas allowed for French studies
  • Synopsis not approved before writing started
  • Dissertation longer or shorter than 45–50 pages
  • Copy of the synopsis approval missing from the dissertation
  • Dissertation not written in French
  • Copied analysis or translated text taken from other writers

If your synopsis is not approved: read the comments, revise the topic or plan, and take it for approval again. Our mentors can rework a returned synopsis using those comments.

How HelpBooks mentors MA French learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their synopsis needs changes, or they have approval but are unsure how to build a 45–50 page dissertation in French. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MFLP-011 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:

  • 5–6 workable topic options based on your texts and interests, to discuss with your Coordinator or Counsellor
  • Synopsis drafted with you and checked before approval
  • Help with revisions if changes are asked
  • After approval, support in building the full dissertation, with original writing, correct citation of your texts and a plagiarism check
  • A final check of length, format and the approval copy before you upload
  • Support until your result is declared
