IGNOU MA Education Dissertation (MESP-001): Guidelines, Synopsis Format, Guide Eligibility and Submission

MESP-001 is the dissertation course of the IGNOU MA Education (MAEDU) programme, offered by the School of Education. Like other IGNOU dissertations, the work runs in two parts: first a research proposal that has to be approved, and then a dissertation based on that approved proposal. The credits, length and submission details for your session are in the dissertation handbook of your programme, so we have not quoted numbers here.

Who can be your MESP-001 supervisor?

IGNOU sets conditions on who can supervise a dissertation, such as qualification, experience and the subject of the supervisor, and they are written in your programme’s handbook. We have not quoted them here because they differ between programmes and sessions. A supervisor who does not meet the conditions is one of the common reasons a proposal is sent back. Before you ask someone to sign your proforma, share their qualifications and experience with our mentors and we will check them against the handbook.

Choosing an MESP-001 dissertation topic

A good MESP-001 topic is narrow, tied to a clear educational problem, and possible for you to study with the time and contacts you have. Some areas that work well:

• Teaching and learning: use of a teaching method or digital tool in classrooms
• Learner outcomes: study habits, motivation or achievement of students
• Teachers: job satisfaction, stress or professional development
• Inclusive education: support for children with special needs or disadvantaged groups
• Educational management: leadership of school heads or working of school committees

If you work in a school or college, a topic linked to your own institution makes data collection far easier. This is also the first thing our mentors look at when they suggest topics to a MAEDU learner.

MESP-001 proposal format

Education research proposals usually cover the parts below. Check your handbook for the exact headings and page limit:

• Title
• Introduction and rationale
• Statement of the problem
• Objectives and, where needed, research questions or hypotheses
• Review of related literature
• Methodology: population, sample, tools, data collection and analysis
• Delimitations
• References

If the proposal is returned, you revise and resend it with the comments.

MESP-001 dissertation structure

After approval, the dissertation is built on the same topic, objectives, sample and location that were approved. It normally covers:

• Introduction
• Review of related literature
• Methodology
• Analysis and interpretation of data, with tables and charts each followed by its explanation
• Findings, conclusion and educational implications
• References
• Appendices such as the tools used

The bound dissertation also carries the approved proposal and the certificate asked for in the handbook. The handbook gives the exact list and the number of copies.

Why MESP-001 proposals and dissertations come back

• Proforma not signed by the student and the supervisor
• Supervisor outside the conditions in the handbook
• Topic too wide, or objectives that the methodology cannot answer
• Tools that do not match the objectives
• Dissertation that changes the topic, sample or study area from the approved proposal
• Approved proposal or certificate missing from the bound copy
• Copied literature review or theory
• Dissertation sent to the wrong office

How many credits is MESP-001?
Check your MAEDU programme guide. We have not quoted a figure because we could not confirm it from IGNOU’s published pages.

Can I choose a supervisor from my workplace?
Yes, if the person meets the supervisor conditions in your handbook. Share their details with us and we will check.

Is there a viva for MESP-001?
Check your programme handbook. IGNOU education dissertations may include a viva, so prepare your own work well either way.

Can I collect data from my own school or college?
Usually yes, with the permission of the head of the institution and the consent of respondents, as long as it matches the sample in your approved proposal.
