MDIP-001 is the project work of the IGNOU MA in Migration and Diaspora (MAMIDI) programme, offered by the School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies. It is an elective of 8 credits and is marked out of 200. The project is a practical application of your coursework, with planned data collection, tabulation and analysis. The work runs in two parts: a short proposal that IGNOU must approve before you start, and then the project report.

Who can be your MDIP-001 guide?
The guideline sets no guide eligibility conditions. It says learners receive mentorship for the proposal after IGNOU approval, and that you may consult IGNOU faculty at the New Delhi campus by email or in person. Because rules can change, confirm with the programme coordinators before you arrange any outside guidance. HelpBooks mentors can check your situation against the latest guideline.
Choosing an MDIP-001 project topic
“Indian diaspora around the world”
“Return migration of Gulf workers to one district of Kerala and their reintegration experience”
A good MDIP-001 topic is relevant, has data you can reach in the time you have, has enough existing literature, and fits your budget. The guideline encourages archival work and return migration, and lists suggested areas such as historiography and archival studies, diaspora films and literature, biographical studies, diasporic poetry, popular culture, new media and diaspora, and case studies on diaspora engagement. Some areas that work well:
- Return migration: why workers return and how they settle back home
- Archival and historical study: letters, records or newspaper archives about an overseas community
- Diaspora in literature and film: representation of home and belonging in a chosen set of texts or films
- New media and diaspora: how migrants use social media to stay connected
- Diaspora engagement: a case study of a state or community scheme that reaches out to its diaspora
If your own family, village or workplace has a migration link, a topic built on it makes access to people and records far easier. This is also the first thing our mentors look at when they suggest topics.
MDIP-001 proposal format
The proposal is no longer than 1,200 to 1,500 words including the reference list, in APA format. It has:
- Title page with your name, degree programme and proposal title
- Topic statement
- Research aims and objectives
- Literature review
- Study design
- Research methods
- Tentative chapter outline (optional)
- References
The proposal is judged on significance, necessity, feasibility, possible original contribution and whether it can be completed in the normal period. Approval must be obtained before you start the project.
MDIP-001 project report structure
The guideline says the report follows the same structure as the proposal, without fixed chapter counts or word limits. In practice that means a full version of each part: introduction and topic statement, aims and objectives, literature review, study design and methods, findings and discussion, conclusion, and references in APA. Keep the title and plan as approved, attach the approval when you submit, and keep a full copy.
HelpBooks mentors help you turn your approved proposal into a complete MDIP-001 report with your own data or archival material, proper analysis and interpretation, and a final check before you submit it. WhatsApp us on 8800002552
Why MDIP-001 proposals and reports come back
- Proposal longer than the 1,200 to 1,500 word limit
- Topic too wide, or without data or records the student can actually reach
- Aims and objectives that the study design cannot answer
- Starting the project before approval is received
- Approval proforma incomplete, without signature, date or enrolment number
- References not in APA format
- Report that moves away from the approved topic and plan
- Copied literature review or theory
If your proposal is not approved: revise it using the comments you receive and send it again to the Programme Coordinator. Our mentors can rework a returned proposal using those comments.
How HelpBooks mentors MAMIDI learners
Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their proposal has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn their material into a full report. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MDIP-001 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:
- 5–6 workable topic options based on your interests, community and city, to discuss with your mentors at IGNOU
- Proposal drafted with you to the MDIP-001 format, with the approval proforma checked line by line before you send it
- Help with revisions if your proposal is returned
- After approval, support in building the full report on your approved proposal, with original writing, your own findings and a plagiarism check
- A final check of the approval, references and submission route before you send the report
- Support until your result is declared, including any changes you are asked to make
