MDEP-520 is the project work of the IGNOU MA in Distance Education (MADE) programme, which is run by the Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE). It carries 8 credits and is placed in the second year of the two-year, 64-credit programme. Learners are usually in-service professionals, and the project is meant to help you understand the realities and practices of distance education systems through a scientific study of a local problem. The detailed rules for the proposal, report and submission are given in the project guidelines, so this page tells you what the programme page confirms and where to check the rest.

Who can be your MDEP-520 guide?

Guide qualifications and experience are listed in the project guidelines issued for your programme, so read them before you approach anyone. A guide outside the eligibility conditions is one of the common reasons an IGNOU proposal is returned. HelpBooks mentors can check your chosen guide against the guidelines before you post anything.

Choosing a distance education project topic

Too broad
“Problems of distance education in India”
Approvable
“Learner support services as perceived by first-year learners of one IGNOU study centre”

A good MDEP-520 topic is a local, practical problem that you can study with a sample you can reach. Some areas that work well:

  • Learner support: counselling, helpline and feedback services as experienced by learners at a study centre
  • Study materials: how learners use print and digital self-learning material
  • Technology in ODL: use of online platforms, apps or video lectures by distance learners
  • Assessment: learners’ views on assignments and term-end examinations
  • Drop-out and persistence: why learners leave or continue a distance programme

If you work at a study centre, regional centre or any open or distance learning institution, a topic linked to your own workplace makes data collection far easier. This is also the first thing our mentors look at when they suggest topics.

MDEP-520 proposal format

The exact proposal contents, length and proforma are given in the MDEP-520 project guidelines for your programme, and you should follow them line by line. Our mentors draft yours in the format your guidelines ask for and check that the objectives can really be answered by the tools and sample you choose, using the research methods you studied in MDE-415.

MDEP-520 project report structure

After approval, the report is built on the same topic, objectives, sample and tools that were approved. Report length, chapter scheme, certificates and the documents to bind in are listed in the project guidelines. Keep the title exactly as approved, attach the approved proposal if the guidelines ask for it, and keep a full copy of what you send.

Got your approval? Let us help you finish the report.
HelpBooks mentors help you turn your approved proposal into a complete MDEP-520 report with your own data, proper tables and interpretation, and a final document check before you post it. WhatsApp us on 8800002552

Why MDEP-520 proposals and reports come back

  • Proforma not signed or dated as the guidelines ask
  • Guide outside the eligibility conditions
  • Topic too wide for the time available
  • Objectives that the methodology cannot answer
  • Report that changes the topic, sample or tools from the approved proposal
  • Approved proposal or certificate missing from the report
  • Copied literature review or theory
  • Documents sent to the wrong office

If your proposal is not approved: follow the resubmission steps in the project guidelines and send a revised proposal with the evaluator’s comments. Our mentors can rework a returned proposal using those comments.

How HelpBooks mentors MADE learners

Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a topic, their proposal has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn data into a proper report. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MDEP-520 journey, from the first topic list to the day your result appears:

  • 5–6 workable topic options based on your job, institution and city, to discuss with your guide
  • Proposal drafted with you in the format your guidelines ask for, with the proforma checked line by line before you post it
  • Help with revisions if the evaluator returns your proposal
  • After approval, support in building the full report on your approved proposal, with original writing, your own data and a plagiarism check
  • A final check of the annexures, certificates and envelope before you send it
  • Support until your result is declared, including viva preparation if your guidelines include a viva
