MAEP-001 is the Dissertation Work course of the IGNOU MA Adult Education programme (MAAE). It carries 10 credits and falls in the second year. You study a problem in adult education that you choose, write a dissertation on it, and submit it to the Regional Centre. The work runs in two parts: first a research proposal that the Regional Centre must approve, and then the dissertation based on the approved proposal. IGNOU also offers MAET-001 (case study or internship report) in place of the dissertation, so decide which one you are doing before you start.

Who can be your MAEP-001 supervisor?
You choose a supervisor who meets the handbook’s criteria, or you ask the Regional Centre to allot one from the approved list. The handbook includes, for example:
If you want a supervisor outside these categories, the handbook lets you submit the person’s details on its Appendix I proforma. The list above is a summary, so confirm the full conditions in the handbook. HelpBooks can check your chosen supervisor against it before you start.
Choosing an adult education dissertation topic
“A study of adult education in India”
“Awareness and participation of women in literacy classes under a state literacy scheme in two blocks of Nalgonda district”
The handbook asks whether the problem can be solved through research, whether it is significant and new, and whether it is feasible for you in terms of skill, interest, money and time. Some areas that work well:
- Literacy and continuing education: reasons for dropout or irregular attendance in adult literacy centres
- Women and community learning: participation of rural women in skill or literacy programmes
- Lifelong learning: learning needs and motivation of working adults
- Workers’ and vocational education: training needs of workers in one trade or industry
- Technology in adult learning: use of mobile phones or digital literacy among adult learners
A topic linked to your own work or locality makes data collection far easier. The handbook has a list of suggested topics, but its sample proposals must not be copied as your own.
MAEP-001 proposal format
The handbook sets a ten-part research proposal:
- Title
- Introduction, which may include the rationale
- Formulation, definition and statement of the problem
- Brief review of related literature
- Research questions
- Objectives
- Hypotheses, only where required
- Operational definitions of terms
- Methodology: method, population and sample, tools, data collection and data analysis
- References
Send the proposal with the prescribed proforma, filled in, to the concerned Regional Director for approval.
MAEP-001 dissertation structure
After approval, the dissertation is written on the same problem, objectives and method that were approved, and the title of the problem becomes the title of the dissertation. The detailed chapter format, page limit and binding rules are in the Handbook on Dissertation Work, so follow your copy of it. Submit two copies to the Regional Director of your Regional Centre. A viva voce is held at the Regional Centre after the evaluation is complete.
HelpBooks mentors help you turn your approved proposal into a complete MAEP-001 dissertation with your own data, proper tables and interpretation, and a final format check before you submit. WhatsApp us on 8800002552
Why MAEP-001 proposals and dissertations come back
- Problem that research cannot answer, or that is not significant or feasible
- Supervisor outside the handbook’s criteria and not proposed on the Appendix I form
- Proposal sections missing, or objectives and hypotheses that do not match the problem
- Proforma missing or incomplete
- Work started before the proposal was approved
- Dissertation that changes the problem or method from the approved proposal
- Sample proposals from the handbook used as one’s own work
- Copied content
If your proposal is returned: revise it as per the expert’s comments and send it again to the Regional Centre. If you cannot complete the dissertation in time, the programme guide allows a later attempt within the four-year maximum from first-year registration. Our mentors can rework a returned proposal using the comments you received.
How HelpBooks mentors MAAE learners
Most learners who reach us have one of three problems: they cannot settle on a problem statement, their proposal has come back once, or they have approval but do not know how to turn data into a dissertation. Our mentors stay with you through the whole MAEP-001 journey, from the first topic list to the day your marks appear:
- 5–6 workable topic options based on your job, organisation and city, to discuss with your supervisor
- Proposal drafted with you to the ten-part MAEP-001 format, with the proforma checked line by line before you post it
- Help with revisions if the expert returns your proposal
- After approval, support in building the full dissertation on your approved proposal, with original writing, your own data and a plagiarism check
- A final check of the format, copies and envelope before you send it to the Regional Centre
- Viva preparation and support until your result is declared

Common questions
Is MAEP-001 compulsory?
It is the 10-credit dissertation course of MAAE, and learners may instead take MAET-001, the case study or internship report option.
Can I choose my own supervisor?
Yes, if the person meets the handbook’s criteria. Otherwise ask the Regional Centre for an approved supervisor, or propose your choice on the Appendix I form.
How many copies do I submit?
The handbook says two copies to the Regional Director for evaluation. Keep your own copy as well.
Is there a viva for MAEP-001?
Yes. Viva voce is part of the evaluation and carries 30% of the marks. It is held at the Regional Centre.
Can HelpBooks help if I have already started?
Yes. Many learners come to us after a returned proposal or with approval in hand. Share what you have, and we pick up from that stage.
