IGNOU MSc Physics (MSCPH) programme guide

IGNOU MSc Physics (MSCPH): Courses, Laboratory Work and Exam Strategy

IGNOU's MSc Physics (MSCPH) gives physics graduates a way to complete a master's degree while they continue working. It is popular with school and college teachers, laboratory staff and graduates preparing for NET, GATE or teaching recruitment exams. The programme is demanding, because it covers the core areas found in any regular MSc: mathematical physics, mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, along with three laboratory courses. This guide explains how the programme is organised and how to prepare for its papers.

Programme at a glance

  • Programme code: MSCPH
  • Duration: minimum 2 years, maximum 4 years
  • Medium: English
  • Eligibility: a B.Sc. with Major/Honours in Physics; or a B.Sc. (including IGNOU's B.Sc. under CBCS) with Physics and Mathematics; or a B.Sc. from IGNOU or another recognised open university with at least 32 credits in Physics and Mathematics as one of the subjects
  • Structure: four semesters of theory courses, three laboratory courses and a choice of electives

Semester-wise courses

Semester Course Credits
1 MPH 001 Mathematical Methods in Physics 4
1 MPH 002 Classical Mechanics I 2
1 MPH 003 Electromagnetic Theory 2
1 MPH 004 Quantum Mechanics I 4
1 MPH 005 Electronics 4
2 MPH 006 Classical Mechanics II 4
2 MPH 007 Classical Electrodynamics 4
2 MPH 008 Quantum Mechanics II 4
2 MPHL 009 General Physics Laboratory 4
2 MPHL 010 Electronics Laboratory 4
3 MPH 011 Statistical Mechanics 4
3 MPH 012 Condensed Matter Physics 4
3 MPH 013 Optics 2
3 MPH 014 Computational Physics 2
3 MPHL 015 Computational Physics: Laboratory 4
4 MPH 016 Atomic and Molecular Physics 4
4 MPH 017 Nuclear and Particle Physics 4

The elective courses are MPHE 025 Materials Science, MPHE 026 Elements of Reactor Physics and MPHE 027 Nanoscience, each of 4 credits. IGNOU's sources place them in the later semesters, so check your programme guide to see how many you must choose and in which semester.

Notice that four of the courses carry only 2 credits. These shorter papers are lighter to prepare, but they should not be ignored, since each one still has to be cleared on its own.

The course list follows IGNOU's official MSCPH programme page. IGNOU may revise courses between sessions, so confirm the current details on ignou.ac.in before you register.

How the term-end exam works

The term-end examination is held in June and December. MSCPH papers combine derivations, short conceptual questions and numerical problems. Your result combines assignment marks with TEE marks, and both components have to be cleared separately.

The assignment for MPH 001 gives a fair idea of what the mathematics paper expects: partial differential equations and separation of variables, special functions such as Bessel, Legendre and Hermite, matrices and tensors, complex analysis with residues and conformal mapping, Fourier and Laplace transforms and elementary group theory. The quantum mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical mechanics papers follow the same pattern of standard derivations followed by applications. Solving the MSCPH previous year solved papers under timed conditions is the best way to judge how much detail each answer needs.

Preparation tips

  • Start with MPH 001. Almost every later paper uses its methods, and weakness in mathematics is the main reason learners struggle with quantum mechanics and electrodynamics.
  • Write derivations by hand regularly. Reading a derivation feels easy, but reproducing it in the exam without a missing step needs practice.
  • Keep a formula sheet for each course, with units and the physical meaning of each term, and revise it in the final week.
  • Solve numerical problems fully, including units and the final value. Partial marks are given for method, but a clean final answer earns the rest.
  • Prepare for the laboratory courses by revising the theory behind each experiment and the sources of error. Keep your record book complete after every session.

Assignments

Each theory course has one tutor-marked assignment. According to the assignment booklet, it carries 30 per cent weightage, is marked out of 100 and has a pass mark of 40. All questions must be attempted. The assignment is valid for a calendar year and must be submitted to your study centre by the due date, as late submissions are not accepted. You also cannot fill the examination form until the assignment has been submitted.

Use the assignment as serious revision. Show every step, draw neat figures where needed and write equations clearly. The questions are close to the level of the exam, so careful work here pays off later.
