IGNOU M.Sc. Geography (MSCGG): Answers to the Questions Students Ask Most

Students often ask whether a person without a geography background can manage IGNOU's M.Sc. Geography (MSCGG). The short answer is yes. This programme is open to graduates of any stream. It is still not an easy degree, because it combines theory papers with map work, statistics, GIS and fieldwork. Below we answer the questions that come up most often from learners who are considering or have just joined MSCGG.

Who can take admission?

Any graduate from a recognised university can apply. The programme runs for a minimum of two years and a maximum of four, and the medium is English. Learners from arts and commerce streams join every year, but they usually need some extra time for Cartography and the quantitative methods lab.

What will I study in each semester?

Semester Theory courses Lab / practical
1 MGG 001 Introduction to Geographic Thought, MGG 008 Advances in Geographical Thought, MGG 002 Geomorphology, MGG 003 Regional Geography of India, MGG 004 Population and Settlement Geography MGGL 001 Cartography
2 MGG 005 Climatology, MGG 006 Economic Geography, MGG 007 Environmental Geography, MGG 010 Urban Geography MGGL 002 Methods of Geographic Analysis (Quantitative and Qualitative)
3 MGG 009 Social Geography, MGG 013 Oceanography, MGG 011 Geographical Information System MGGL 003 Geospatial Analysis, MGGL 004 Field Survey Methods
4 MGG 012 Introduction to Remote Sensing, plus one elective from MGGE 002 Natural Resources Management, MGGE 003 Natural Hazards and Disaster Management or MGGE 004 Hydrology and Water Resources MGGL 005 Remote Sensing Techniques, MGGP 001 Project

MGG 001 and MGG 008 are two-credit courses that are read together. Treat them as one paper on geographic thought, from the early schools up to modern approaches.

Which papers do students find hardest?

Most learners find Geomorphology and Climatology demanding. Both have heavy terminology and need diagrams in almost every answer. Regional Geography of India is easier to understand, but its syllabus is large. In the later semesters, GIS and Remote Sensing feel new to many students, although the questions on them follow a fairly fixed set of concepts.

The quickest way to understand what examiners expect is to look at old papers side by side. When you read five or six years of Geomorphology questions together, the repeated topics stand out clearly: landform development, slope evolution, the cycle of erosion and fluvial processes. Our MSCGG solved paper collection is arranged in exactly this way, so you can revise one topic across several papers at once.

How should I write answers in geography papers?

  • Draw at least one neat, labelled diagram in every long answer on physical geography. A simple sketch of a river profile or a pressure belt often earns more marks than an extra paragraph.
  • For human geography papers, give Indian examples by name, such as a city, a river basin or a census trend.
  • Give definitions in one or two clear lines before you explain a concept.
  • In questions on geographic thought, mention the thinker and the school together, for example Ratzel and determinism, or Vidal de la Blache and possibilism.

Do assignments really matter?

Yes. Assignment marks are added to your term-end marks, and you cannot get your result for a course without submitting its assignment. Writing assignments is also good practice for the exam, because the questions are framed in a similar way. If you are short of time, a solved MSCGG assignment can serve as a reference for structure and length. Always write the final answers in your own handwriting and your own words.

What is the best way to revise in the last two weeks?

Do not start new chapters at this stage. Pick the topics that have come up most often in past papers and prepare short notes with diagrams for each one. Many of our students use the MSCGG TOP 20 questions as a final checklist. If you can write all twenty answers confidently, you have covered most of what usually appears in the paper.
