IGNOU MSCENV M.Sc. Environmental Science programme guide - subjects, exam pattern and preparation tips

IGNOU MSc Environmental Science (MSCENV): Subjects, Exam Pattern and Preparation Guide

MSc Environmental Science (MSCENV) is one of the most popular science programmes at IGNOU. Learners are attracted to it because it is offered in distance mode and includes laboratory work, which makes it practical. Most learners are teachers, working professionals or graduates who want to enter the environment sector. This guide explains how the programme is structured, which subjects are studied in each semester, and how to prepare for the term-end exam.

Programme at a glance

  • Programme code: MSCENV
  • Duration: minimum 2 years, maximum 4 years
  • Medium: English
  • Eligibility: a bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Agricultural Science, Forestry or Veterinary Science
  • Structure: four semesters, with a lab course in each of the first three semesters and a dissertation in the final semester

Semester-wise subjects

Semester 1

  • MEV 011 – Fundamentals of Environmental Science and Ecology
  • MEV 012 – Earth Processes
  • MEV 013 – Environmental Chemistry
  • MEVL 011 – Environmental Science Lab Course 1

Semester 2

  • MEV 014 – Sustainable Natural Resource Management
  • MEV 015 – Environmental Pollution, Control and Management
  • MEV 016 – Environmental Impact Assessment
  • MEVL 012 – Environmental Science Lab Course 2

Semester 3

  • MEV 017 – Environmental Legislations
  • MEV 018 – Environmental Health and Ecotoxicology
  • MEV 019 – Research Methodology for Environmental Science
  • MEVL 013 – Environmental Science Lab Course 3

Semester 4

The final semester includes the dissertation (MEVP 011) along with courses from the MEVE series, such as Global Climate Change (MEVE 011), Environmental Management (MEVE 012), Environmental Biotechnology (MEVE 013), Biodiversity Conservation and Management (MEVE 014), Disaster Management (MEVE 015) and Urban Environment (MEVE 016). Before you register, check the current programme guide to confirm how many MEVE courses you have to choose.

How the term-end exam works

IGNOU holds the term-end examination (TEE) twice a year, in June and December. Each theory paper is marked out of 100. Your final result combines the assignment marks with the TEE marks, and a master's degree learner has to clear both components separately. A good assignment score therefore helps, but it cannot make up for a weak exam paper.

Questions in MSCENV papers are rarely tricky. Most of them are drawn from the same core areas every year: ecosystem concepts, biogeochemical cycles, air and water pollution control, EIA methodology, Indian environmental laws and climate change. Learners who have practised previous year papers usually recognise the pattern quickly.

Preparation tips that work

Begin with the subjects where you are weakest, not with the ones you enjoy. For most science graduates this means Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Legislations, because both need careful revision of terms, Acts and their years.

  • Solve at least four or five previous year papers for each subject before the exam month.
  • Write answers with headings, short points and a simple diagram wherever possible. Examiners in environmental science appreciate labelled figures.
  • Keep a one-page sheet of important Acts and conventions (for example, the Environment Protection Act 1986 and the Kyoto Protocol) and revise it daily during the last week.
  • Submit your assignments on time. Late submission can hold back your result even if you clear the exam.
