Most people who join IGNOU's MA Psychology (MAPC) come with one clear goal. They want to become a counsellor, work in a clinical setting, or move into HR. The programme supports all three paths, but the choice that matters most comes in the second year, when you select your specialisation. This guide explains how the two years are organised so that you can plan with that choice in mind.
The basics
MAPC is open to graduates of any discipline. It runs for a minimum of two years and a maximum of four, and the medium is English. Both years include practical work, and the second year also has an internship and a project.
Year one: the common foundation
| Code | Course |
|---|---|
| MPC 001 | Cognitive Psychology, Learning and Memory |
| MPC 002 | Life Span Psychology |
| MPC 003 | Personality: Theories and Assessment |
| MPC 004 | Advanced Social Psychology |
| MPC 005 | Research Methods |
| MPC 006 | Statistics in Psychology |
| MPCL 007 | Practicum in Experimental Psychology and Psychological Testing |
All first year papers are descriptive except one. MPC 006 involves calculation. Learners from arts backgrounds often lose marks there because of small arithmetic errors, not because they do not understand the concepts. Practise the standard tests (t-test, chi-square, correlation and ANOVA) by hand until the steps become routine.
For the theory papers, the themes repeat more than students expect. Memory models, Piaget and Erikson, trait theories, attitude change and research designs appear in some form in almost every session. Reading the solved MAPC papers from a few sessions makes this pattern very clear and helps you decide where to spend your time.
Year two: choosing your specialisation
Clinical Psychology (MPCE 011 Psychopathology, MPCE 012 Psychodiagnostics, MPCE 013 Psychotherapeutic Methods) is the right choice if you want to work with mental health conditions in hospitals or clinics, or plan further clinical training.
Counselling Psychology (MPCE 021 Counselling Psychology, MPCE 022 Assessment in Counselling and Guidance, MPCE 023 Interventions in Counselling) suits work in schools, colleges, NGOs and private counselling practice.
Industrial and Organisational Psychology (MPCE 031 Organisational Behaviour, MPCE 032 Human Resource Development, MPCE 033 Organisational Development) is aimed at learners who want to work in HR, training or corporate settings.
Each stream also has a practicum, an internship and a project. Plan your internship placement early, because finding a suitable organisation is often the slowest part of the second year.
Writing answers that score
- Begin with a precise definition, and name the psychologist behind the theory.
- Explain the theory under clear subheadings, and do not write one long block of text.
- Add a real-life or Indian example to show that you can apply the concept.
- End with a short evaluation that states one strength and one limitation of the theory.
Assignments follow the same pattern and count towards your result. If you want a reference for length and structure before writing your own, see our MAPC solved assignments. Close to the exam, the MAPC TOP 20 questions work well as a final revision list.
